Hi everyone! I'm sorry to be posting a question first and introducing myself later, but I just had a quick question regarding my Pet Rock, A.K.A the mussel I picked up for my tank.

So, the basics - I've got a 70L tank, Silver shark, Mollie, 2 catfish, am getting more fish within the next week. Lovely decoration, PH level all sorted, ammonia a bit high, but am bringing that under control. Nitrate and whatnot all sorted as well, ammonia is high, the tank was established a week ago, so things are just settling down.

Now, I noticed on my Pet Rock that his shell is actually... peeling. I wasn't too sure he was alive yesterday as he'd not moved AT ALL, but tonight he's gone and moved himself clear across to the far side of the tank, which is fantastic because I was worried about the poor thing, but now he's given me a good view of his backside, and like I said, the shell seems to be peeling. Is this normal for a mussel? Is he alright? Should I be contacting the aquarium I got him from and ask what's going on?

Many thank-yous in advance!

If I had any idea what a 'Fishy Cycle' meant, maybe I could answer that. I do right by my fish, so I really don't know what you're talking about.

A fishy cycle is putting the fish through the trials of being in a newly set up tank without established filtration.

The nitrites are about to hit and they are deadly. Please return the silver shark and the catfish ( and the mussel, they are not safe in fishtanks) at least and don't get any more fish until ammonia is zero , nitrites have been and gone and the nitrates start to rise.
A 70L tank is far too small for silver sharks - 700Litres is just about big enough - as they grow to over a foot long and need keeping in groups.

Please read this and this which will help explain what happens in new tanks and please don't get any more fish for now.
You do need to be doing daily water changes using dechlorinator. About 20% to keep the ammonia and then nitrites below leathal levels.
